Advanced T3 Matrix Impact Protection

The T3 Matrix system is designed around advanced impact-protection technology intended to help reduce the energy transferred between horse and rider. Toklat T3 Matrix Square Skirt Impact Protection WoolBack Shim Pad 43-87555-BK

Depending on the insert selected, Toklat offers interchangeable impact-protection options including Extreme Pro, Ortho-Impact and FlexForm. Extreme Pro uses perforated 9mm XRD™ foam, while Ortho-Impact combines 5mm XRD foam with 1/2-inch memory foam. FlexForm uses 1/2-inch memory foam primarily for cushioning rather than significant impact protection. (Toklat)

The Extreme Pro XRD insert is engineered to absorb up to 90% of impact energy, according to Toklat’s product information. This makes it particularly appealing for performance horses with well-developed topline muscles that require preventative protection during regular work. (Toklat)

The interchangeable insert system also means riders can adapt the pad as their horse’s needs change.

Built-In Shim System for Better Saddle Fit

One of the biggest advantages of the Toklat T3 Matrix Shim Pad is its integrated adjustment system.

The pad features three internal pockets on each side of the spine, with two 1/4-inch felt shims per pocket, providing 12 removable shims in total. These shims can be strategically positioned to adjust saddle balance from front to back or side to side. Toklat T3 Matrix Square Skirt Impact Protection WoolBack Shim Pad 43-87555-BK(Toklat)

This makes the pad useful when dealing with common saddle-fitting challenges such as:

• Front-to-back saddle imbalance
• Side-to-side asymmetry
• Saddle rocking
• Saddle bridging
• Changes in topline development
• Uneven muscle development
• Temporary changes in horse condition

The shims are accessed through a Velcro spine opening, allowing adjustments without replacing the entire saddle pad. (Toklat)

Importantly, Toklat advises that the shims should not be used to compensate for a saddle that is fundamentally the wrong size or shape for the horse. If excessive shimming is required, professional saddle fitting should be considered. (Toklat)

Premium 100% WoolBack® Lining

The WoolBack® lining is one of the defining features of the 43-87555-BK.

Toklat describes WoolBack as 100% natural virgin wool manufactured in the USA, featuring a resilient dense pile designed to provide excellent pressure relief. (Toklat)

The natural wool lining provides a soft, comfortable surface against the horse’s back while complementing the pad’s impact-protection and saddle-fit technology. Toklat T3 Matrix Square Skirt Impact Protection WoolBack Shim Pad 43-87555-BK

For riders who spend long hours riding, natural wool can also provide useful moisture and temperature-management characteristics, making WoolBack an appealing choice for demanding Western riding.

Lightweight and Breathable Construction

Despite its advanced protection and shim-adjustment system, the Toklat T3 Matrix is designed to remain extremely lightweight and breathable. Toklat T3 Matrix Square Skirt Impact Protection WoolBack Shim Pad 43-87555-BK

Its ergonomic construction promotes freedom of movement while the contoured high profile is designed to provide generous wither clearance. The pad also incorporates a correctly positioned cut-out intended to support a close-contact leg position. (Toklat)

This combination makes the T3 Matrix suitable for riders who want the protection of a technical saddle pad without unnecessary bulk. Toklat T3 Matrix Square Skirt Impact Protection WoolBack Shim Pad 43-87555-BK

Square Skirt Western Saddle Pad Design

The 43-87555-BK is designed for Western saddles with a square-skirt configuration.

Its rugged construction is intended to withstand regular Western riding while the black wear leathers provide additional durability in high-contact areas. Current product information identifies genuine black wear leathers as part of the Performance Shim Pad configuration. (Tack Warehouse)

The result is a professional-looking Western saddle pad suitable for riders who want premium technical performance without sacrificing traditional Western functionality. Toklat T3 Matrix Square Skirt Impact Protection WoolBack Shim Pad 43-87555-BK

Choosing the Right T3 Impact Insert

Toklat offers different T3 impact inserts for different riding requirements.

Extreme Pro: Uses 9mm perforated XRD foam and is designed for strong impact protection and breathability. Toklat describes it as ideal for horses with well-developed topline muscle and performance horses in good condition. Toklat T3 Matrix Square Skirt Impact Protection WoolBack Shim Pad 43-87555-BK(Toklat)

Ortho-Impact: Combines XRD foam and memory foam for impact protection plus cushioning. It is positioned for horses with less-developed toplines, senior horses or horses returning to work. (Toklat)

FlexForm: Uses memory foam for cushioning and is intended primarily for low-impact or occasional riding rather than significant impact protection. Toklat T3 Matrix Square Skirt Impact Protection WoolBack Shim Pad 43-87555-BK online(Toklat)

The interchangeable system allows riders to choose the appropriate insert and replace it separately if the horse’s needs change.

Proper Saddle Fit Still Matters

A shim saddle pad can help fine-tune saddle balance, but it should not be viewed as a replacement for a properly fitted saddle. Toklat T3 Matrix Square Skirt Impact Protection WoolBack Shim Pad 43-87555-BK

Toklat recommends removing shims when they are no longer needed and warns that excessive shimming indicates that the saddle may not be appropriate for the horse. (Toklat)

Check saddle fit regularly because horses can change shape as they gain muscle, lose condition or change their workload.

For the best results, consult a qualified saddle fitter or equine professional if you experience persistent saddle-fitting problems. Toklat T3 Matrix Square Skirt Impact Protection WoolBack Shim Pad 43-87555-BK
